Albert Payson Terhune was an author in the earlier half of this century, whose most popular books revolved around collies. Many are based on dogs he actually owned, including the popular "Lad" books. Many of us that today own collies and/or shelties can trace our first knowledge of the breed back to reading his books in our youth. While his books may be considered children's books, they are more on par with books like "Call of the Wild"...not complicated reading, but enjoyable to all ages. Almost all his books are out of print today, and must be acquired through used book sellers.I have some extra Terhune books I am looking to sell. These books are vintage books...real collectors items and hard to find! You can check a list of chapters and publication dates of these books on the web.
- Lochinvar Luck
Scotsman Jamie Mackellar buys a collie puppy, sight unseen. The pup is not all that he had hoped, and gets loose, living in the wild for a time. When the dog is recovered, it has evolved into a splendid specimen, and becomes Jamie's devoted chum. This book was one of my favorites as a child, and one of the first I bought when I first ran into someone that had some Terhune books.
- Buff, A Collie
The first half of this book deals with Buff, a collie with a strange streak of bulldog in him. The other half is an assortment of various collie stories, and a chapter on the Sunnybank collies.
- My Friend the Dog
A collection of 12 collie stories, well-worth having. These are all fictional stories, not based on the Sunnybank collies.
- Chips, The Adventures of a Mongrel Scamp
A non-collie Terhune book, this tells the story of Chips, the mixed breed dog who desires the good life...and finds it! The contrast between the terrier Chips, and the obedient collies, is quite humorous. I have a nice copy of this book with a dust jacket.
- Treve
This is one of my own favorites among the non-Lad books. Treve is owned by two men, one his dearest chum, the other a secret friend. Who loves him more?
- The Critter
A collection of collie stories from Terhune. I have a nice copy of this one.
Don't see the book you want? I do have some others, but am currently selling off what extras I have so most of the really popular books, like the Lad books, Wolf and Grey Dawn have all been sold. Just don't have the time to provide these books anymore and was hard to even break even doing it, since many are easily aquired on the web now. If you're interested in any of these books, just let me know which ones you would like information on.
